This action is known in many forms: the red square (although it is not itself a square ), the red carpet, the Stadtlounge (City Lounge), the Raiffeisenplatz (because the Raiffeisen banking group has offices here) ... The district Bleicheli where is close to the medieval historic center but is not part of the site and the problem was that the excessive dominance of the financial offices created an unfriendly environment for citizens.

should be noted that St. Gallen, despite being a small city (about 75,000 inhabitants) and has been declared World Heritage by UNESCO because its rich historical heritage, is committed to progress in many fields of modernity and the arts.

The City Council and the Verband der Schweizer Raiffeisenbanken (SVRB) decided to sponsor a contest with the idea of \u200b\u200bcreating this space in the neighborhood of Bleicheli a "public living room." Pipilotti Rist and Carlos Martinez won the competition with a proposal called "Stadtlounge" (City Lounge, Urban Living.)

In the project, the floor simulating a red carpet that covered the entire floor, but also the furniture, banks, sculptures, etc. giving unity to the space and making it a kind of urban living, carpeted of course, more friendly for pedestrians, and breaking the hardness of the office buildings that made up the area.

The entire public space is divided into rooms, each with a specific function: the reception, coffee area, the living relaxation, business lounge, the sculpture park or the space of the synagogue. But they all joined together on the carpet red covers everything. For example, the room (relaxation area) is in a place with seats, armchairs and sofas that lead the meeting and rest. Existing trees characterize the source location and marks the center of the square.

This alleged carpet, in fact, is the pavement (but not only) has a base that can remove water, and the coating layer (which Tartan is a kind of like standing on the running track) is draining.
The lighting is provided by balloons, subjects with cables to buildings side, which can be adapted not only to regulate the time of day and season, but also the activity that is taking place at the City Lounge.
