This really is a close encounter.
The NASA solar observatory captured a stunning video of a comet heading towards the sun between Tuesday and Wednesday - and after having crashed, displaying a huge ball of plasma.
The video, captured by the Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) NASA's jet appears to show a rising fireball after the collision. That's not what happened, NASA said. Instead, a coronal mass ejection casually emerged from the right at the same time as the comet approaches and evaporates in the sun.
Meanwhile, the comet could belong to a group called "flush Kreutz sun", who come from a family of comets discovered by amateur astronomer Sergey Shurpakov.
Kreutz was a giant comet that disintegrated centuries ago, and whose parts still lying around in space.
Most are close to the sun, so occasionally crash against surface.
The crash occurred between 10 and 11 May, was captured clearly as a result of notice of an amateur astronomer.
